School District 54 is getting ready to host its single largest event of the year – the annual Partners Club/Young Athletes track meet on May 17.

The event will begin with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. on the track behind Eisenhower Junior High  School, 800 W. Hassell Road in Hoffman Estates.

Events will take place until noon followed by lunch for all athletes, their partners and volunteers. The meet will be cancelled in case of inclement weather.

“The Young Athletes portion of the meet is going to be exciting. This is the biggest District 54 Young Athletes event held during the school year” said Lisa Liesz, District 54 Special Olympics, coordinator of Young Athletes. “The athletes have been training all year. There will be more than 1,000 District 54 students, staff and volunteers participating in this day.”

Partners Club is based at several District 54 schools and includes students with disabilities with their nondisabled peers. The purpose of the program is to combine athletes and their peers together to practice sports skills. However, Partners Club often accomplishes much more than that. A bond of respect is built between athlete and partner. The students participate in activities all year together,
including this track meet each spring.

The Young Athletes program is an innovative sports play program for children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities, designed to introduce them to the world of sports. The benefits of the program include improvement not only physically and cognitively but also and socially. This program also serves as an introduction for families to the resources and support available within Special Olympics. Nearly 800 students participate in this program throughout the district.

Hanover Highlands 3rd – 6th graders getting pumped up for their ISATs!

Wednesday, February 29th [Happy Leap Year!], Hanover Highlands welcomed Master Sky to our school for a presentation to pump the students up for their upcoming ISAT tests that begin this coming Monday. In doing so, Master Sky spoke about the ability to maintain focus, have the confidence to problem solve and work through tough questions  and the positive attitude to succeed.

Master Sky got the students up on their feet, practicing a few focused moves and provided the students with a great deal of encouragement. Last year he visited as a part of our 5% overall increase challenge – which Hanover made! Master Sky was quite excited to hear that we had achieved our goal.
This years goal is to have have at least 90% of all 3rd through 6th grade students score in the Meets or Exceeds scoring category in both Reading and Math. We know they can do it as they’ve been working hard all year long!
For any more information pertaining to the Illinois Standardized Achievement Test, please go to http://www.isbe.net/assessment/isat.htm. Thank you for your constant effort and support!

Wonderful Hanover Highlands Community,

Let me start by saying thank you to all of our parents who
attended our parent-teacher conferences two weeks ago, we have tallied our
attendance results and we had the highest attendance we have ever had at any of
our parent-teacher conferences. We had 97% of our parents attend their
children’s conference, this is truly amazing considering that the weather was
not very cooperative the days of conferences. Thank you again for taking time
out of your busy schedules to attend our parent-teacher conferences. I would
also like to thank our wonderful staff here at Hanover Highlands for all of
their hard work in ensuring that your children are academically successful and
for their flexibility in scheduling conferences.  As always should you have any
questions regarding the academic progress of your child do not hesitate to
contact us.

Attached you will find the latest edition of the Hanover
Hilites newsletter. Also, just a friendly that tonight is our Family Movie
Night. We will be showing the Smurfs movie. The doors will open at 6pm and the
movie will start promptly at 6:30pm. There will be a concession stand. The cost
is only $1 per person or $5 for an entire family. Hope to see you all here this
evening- have a wonderful weekend!

Conferences & Weather

Posted Thursday, January 12th, 2012 by evandesampel

Hanover Highlands Community,

Well it seems like our mild weather has come to an end and winter is finally upon us. Please be careful as you make your way to our school today and tomorrow for our conferences. If you are running late or are unable to make it to your scheduled conference due to the weather please contact the teacher directly to make alternate arrangements. The teachers contact information can be found on our website or you can also call our main office number at 630-736-4230. Also, we know that many of our former students enjoy visiting their former teachers, however this is really a time for our current Hanover Highlands students to share their academic progress with you. If you need to bring siblings to conferences they must remain with you at all times. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Attached you will find the latest edition of our Hanover Hilites newsletter. Below you will also find some important information/reminders.

  • Now that the winter weather has arrived please remember to follow all of our school procedures for morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Please remember that you cannot park, stop, or drop off students in front of the school at any time during school hours. This is a village ordinanceand it is enforced by the Hanover Park Police Department.
  • Open Enrollment Fair: The Open Enrollment Fair is an event when parents and students learn more about unique programs in the district. The Open Enrollment fair will take place at Addams Junior High School on the evening of January 25th. Hanover Highlands is a dual language school and as such it is an option to parents in our community. We will be admitting students into the Spanish dual language program for the 2012-13 school year in Kindergarten. Please consider attending the Open Enrollment Fair at Addams if you are interested in knowing more about our dual language program.
  • Hand Sanitizers: Each classroom has hand sanitizer dispensers installed for use by students. We have many different allergies present at school. The District 54 health department reviewed MSDS product sheets to select the product used in the schools. For the safety of everyone at school, students cannot bring their own hand sanitizers to use at school.

  • Busing: For the safety of our bused students we do not allow students that are scheduled to ride the bus to ride the bus some days of the week and not other days. Students who ride the bus need to have the same riding arrangement every morning or every afternoon.

  • School Closings: Earlier this year we sent home information about weather emergencies. Please go to this link if you need a second copy of the information which was sent home prior to winter vacation. http://sd54.org/schoolcancellations/

In the interest of keeping our students safe, District 54 would like to reinforce a few laws and policies concerning smoking, cell phone use and school buses.

  • No Smoking at Schools: District 54 policy prohibits smoking or the use of tobacco products on district property and in district facilities, regardless of whether students are present or school is in session. Individuals or groups using or renting facilities are also banned from smoking or using tobacco products in District 54 facilities or on District 54 properties.

  • School Bus Stop Arm Violations: It is unlawful for a driver to pass a school bus that has stopped to load or unload children when its stop signal arm is extended. Any driver traveling in the same direction as the bus is required to stop his vehicle when the driver is on a road fewer than four lanes of traffic.
  • Cell Phone Use in School Zones: It is unlawful for any person, regardless of age, to use a cell phone at any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a school speed zone.

Have a great long weekend everyone! I hope to see you all at conferences.

Schools recognized for PBIS programs

Schools recognized for PBIS programs

Posted by Terri McHugh on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 at 3:21 pm

The Illinois PBIS Network recognized 15 District 54 schools this year for their success in implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports.

Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports – or PBIS – is a proactive, schoolwide system that teaches appropriate behavior throughout the school – in the classroom, on the bus, in the hallways, in the restrooms and on the playground. The entire staff team focuses not only on individual students with challenging behavior but on providing positive behavior support to all children. Schools that wish to be recognized for their implementation of PBIS must submit an application in June along with supporting documentation. The levels of recognition are Start-Up, Emerging, Implementing, Fully Implementing and Exemplar.

  • Frost Junior High School received the highest level – Exemplar. Frost is one of only two schools in the state to reach this milestone.
  • Hanover Highlands, Aldrin, Blackwell, Lakeview, MacArthur and Campanelli elementary schools and Keller and Eisenhower junior high schools are recognized as Implementing – “maintaining
the school-wide PBIS foundation and building the foundation for Tier2/Secondary Level Interventions.”
  • Link, Muir, Collins and Armstrong elementary schools and Addams and Mead junior high schools are recognized as Emerging – “building the foundation for school-wide PBIS implementation.”

PBIS has several components:

  • Behavioral expectations are defined:A small number of clearly defined behavioral expectations are stated in positive and simple rules. For example, some of our schools use the Three B’s: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. Most schools kick off the school year with an assembly, whole school meeting or series of stations that introduce students to these concepts and reinforce the ideas for returning students.
  • Behavioral expectations are taught:The behavioral expectations are taught to all students in real context and reinforced throughout the school year. Students often refer to them as “cool tools.” All staff throughout the building uses the same language to speak to students about behavioral expectations.
  • Appropriate behaviors are acknowledged:Once appropriate behaviors have been defined and taught, they need to be acknowledged on a regular basis. Staff looks for opportunities throughout the year to recognize students who are meeting their expectations. Many schools will give out tickets and enter students’ names in a drawing to win rewards. Rewards include trinkets, extra gym time and reading to younger children.
  • Behavioral errors are corrected proactively:When students violate behavioral expectations, clear procedures are in place to explain to students their inappropriate behavior and to prevent continued disruptions to the instructional environment.
  • Program evaluations and adaptations are made by a team:District 54 schools collect data on student behavior and use that information when making decisions about behavior systems. By tracking changes in student behavior, staff can evaluate and adjust its own practices.
  • Administrators provide active and ongoing support.

Traditional discipline typically contains reactive procedures that focus on control with punitive consequences. This perspective is incomplete because the process lacks attention to the development and strategic reteaching of positive social behaviors. Research suggests that punishment by itself is ineffective in achieving long-term suppressions of problem behavior.

More information about PBIS and the list of schools recognized in Illinois can be found on the PBIS Illinois website: http://www.pbisillinois.org.
