Posted by Terri McHugh on Friday, May 11th, 2012 at 1:10 pm

School District 54 is getting ready to host its single largest event of the year – the annual Partners Club/Young Athletes track meet on May 17.

The event will begin with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. on the track behind Eisenhower Junior High School, 800 W. Hassell Road in Hoffman Estates.

Events will take place until noon followed by lunch for all athletes, their partners and volunteers. The meet will be cancelled in case of inclement weather.

“The Young Athletes portion of the meet is going to be exciting. This is the biggest District 54 Young Athletes event held during the school year” said Lisa Liesz, District 54 Special Olympics, coordinator of Young Athletes. “The athletes have been training all year. There will be more than 1,000 District 54 students, staff and volunteers participating in this day.”

Partners Club is based at several District 54 schools and includes students with disabilities with their nondisabled peers. The purpose of the program is to combine athletes and their peers together to practice sports skills. However, Partners Club often accomplishes much more than that. A bond of respect is built between athlete and partner. The students participate in activities all year together,
including this track meet each spring.

The Young Athletes program is an innovative sports play program for children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities, designed to introduce them to the world of sports. The benefits of the program include improvement not only physically and cognitively but also and socially. This program also serves as an introduction for families to the resources and support available within Special Olympics. Nearly 800 students participate in this program throughout the district.

Field Day is approaching fast – 16 days out! This year, Mrs. Cervantes is preparing the many fun events to along the Olympic theme, as this year’s summer games will be taking place in England. Today, our preschool class was the first of many to be “torch carrier,” as the torch will be passed on from class to class making its way throughout the halls of Hanover prior to its grand arrival to start the games on May 30th.

This year, each classroom will be picking a country to represent in the games. Hopefully the weather will be beautiful as the kids, staff and volunteers can enjoy this friendly competition outside. If you happen to have the day free and would like to join and help out, please fill out the form which should be found in the Hanover HiLites and send it into school with your child.

Keep your eyes open for further information as the Games rapidly approach! Thanks!

The fifth and sixth grade students have been reading through a variety of selected texts for this, the Fourth Annual Battle of the Books Championship. During this portion of the Battle of the Books, the teams within each classroom will battle it out for the right to represent their classroom in the championship being held on May 23rd at 12:30 in the gymnasium.
Wednesday, February 29th [Happy Leap Year!], Hanover Highlands welcomed Master Sky to our school for a presentation to pump the students up for their upcoming ISAT tests that begin this coming Monday. In doing so, Master Sky spoke about the ability to maintain focus, have the confidence to problem solve and work through tough questions and the positive attitude to succeed.

Master Sky got the students up on their feet, practicing a few focused moves and provided the students with a great deal of encouragement. Last year he visited as a part of our 5% overall increase challenge – which Hanover made! Master Sky was quite excited to hear that we had achieved our goal.

This years goal is to have have at least 90% of all 3rd through 6th grade students score in the Meets or Exceeds scoring category in both Reading and Math. We know they can do it as they’ve been working hard all year long!

For any more information pertaining to the Illinois Standardized Achievement Test, please go to http://www.isbe.net/assessment/isat.htm. Thank you for your constant effort and support!
